Report published: Australian users’ experiences with control features on social media services and dating apps

This week the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts published our report on Australian users’ experiences with control features on social media services and dating apps. Our team led by Asher Flynn and including Lisa Wheildon, Zarina Vakhitova, and Bridget Harris, partnered with the Department on this project to explore social media control features like blocking, reporting, flagging content, filtering, privacy settings, and maintaining multiple profiles. We undertook platform walkthroughs (Light, Burgess and Duguay 2018) with 20 platforms, and spoke to 104 people in Australia through focus groups and interviews. Check out the report to see what we found, including the extent of control features available to Australians on social media and dating aps, awareness of these functions and perceptions of their effectiveness. We also collected suggestions for improving these functions from our participants.
