Men’s Drinking Cultures – Report with VicHealth

Today we launched our report into Men’s Drinking Cultures in Victoria, in partnership with VicHealth. The project was led by Steve Roberts, and involved a collaboration with some terrific colleagues, including Karla Elliot, Michael Savic, Brittany Ralph, Jo Lindsay, Kerry O’Brien and Dan Lubman.

Key findings and the full report can be accessed here: https://www.vichealth.vic.gov.au/media-and-resources/publications/mens-risky-drinking

One of the research methods we used in the study was based on the social media scroll back method I developed with Sian Lincoln. Rather than relying on abstract recollection and pure memory-work, applying the scroll back method in this study allowed us to get at specific drinking events with our participants, in interviews, to prompt story-telling and reflection on who was there, what was happening, volume of alcohol consumed, and social practices (rounds, shots, pre-drinks, etc.).

You can read more about the scroll back method here: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1468794117700707
