A while back I teamed up with my colleagues Prof. Andy Bennett and Chris Driver to put together a seminar for HDR (Higher Degree Research/postgrad) students on publishing during the PhD candidature. Each of us had different perspectives to offer. Andy is a very senior academic who now directs a research centre, I’ve just finished my PhD, and Chris is about half way through. 

Andy gave a broad introduction to publishing for social sciences/humanities PhD students, I spoke about my experiences of co-authoring with my supervisor during candidature, and Chris spoke about solo authoring but with guidance from a supervisor. We had some really positive feedback from the students that attended, so I’m putting our notes up here.
